Planned Giving

Endowments have the capacity to generate income for Hebrew Academy or the Strelitz Early Childhood Center on a permanent basis, providing future economic security, as well as enabling us to fulfill the goal of ensuring a quality Jewish day school education for every Jewish child in Tidewater.
Hebrew Academy is allied with two non-profit foundations whose raison d'etre is to benefit the school, the Hebrew Academy Scholarship Foundation, Inc. and the Hebrew Academy of Tidewater Foundation, Inc. Planned Giving encourages members of the Jewish community to dedicate a meaningful percentage of their estate after death (after all appropriate tax planning measures and discharges of obligations are provided for), either by will or equivalent inter vivos gifts.
Prudent investment of principal and a sensible distribution of income will serve to facilitate the expansion of the school, increased enrollment, enhanced quality of education, lower tuition, and the broad availability of scholarships for families in need. The funds of the two foundations are administered by the Tidewater Jewish Foundation, which, historically, has recommended a policy of distributing 5% per annum.
Operation Jewish Education - The 5% Mandate
The National Jewish Day School Scholarship Committee has formulated a truly bold vision, and called upon the American Jewish community to create trust funds whose annual interest would provide adequate revenue to support the national day school system in perpetuity. In an open letter to the Jewish community of America, they write:
"In the tradition of Rabbi Yehoshua ben Gamla, our leaders have declared that it is every Jew's obligation to act now for Jewish education. The obligation of v'shinantan l'vanecha (diligently teaching our children) is a communal responsibility so that high quality Jewish education can be available for all children who seek it."
